Our History
The African Science Frontiers Initiatives (ASFI) was established in 2020 as a platform for capacity building in science and research for African scholars. ASFI’s mission, “to raise the next generation of African scientists with the right competence to drive Africa’s development through innovative scientific research”, was carved out in recognition of the cardinal role science and research play in any society’s development.
ASFIScholar's History in Brief
Africa’s scientific contribution to continental and global development agenda remains poor. One of the major contributors to this remains inadequate or lack of research capacity to undertake cutting-edge and innovative research that has implications for societal development.
ASFI sets out to bridge this gap among African scholars by offering hands-on training that give them the capacity to do better. In doing this, ASFI explores different opportunities and creates platforms to achieve its ambitions.
Early in its establishment, ASFI crossed path with late Prof. Charles Ayo, former vice chancellor of Covenant University, Nigeria, and the pioneer vice chancellor of Trinity University, Lagos, Nigeria, until his demise. These interactions revealed the alignment of interest between ASFI and Prof. Ayo to empower African scientists through creating an online platform that will facilitates learning, teaching, scholarly sharing of resources, collaboration, and visibility.
Prof. Ayo had long nurtured this idea, so coming in contact with ASFI, which had a similar ambition, re-invigorated his long-lasting passion. The two parties agreed to forge together to achieve our common interests – this partnership resulted in the idea of ASFIScholar. Prof. Ayo went on to become the Deputy Director of ASFI and was delegated by the ASFI management to supervise the building of the ASFIScholar platform. He was on this supervisory role during the early development of ASFIScholar before his death. Prof. Ayo’s vigor was infectious and ASFIScholar is a testament to the dream we have had together during the last three years.
With ASFIScholar, ASFI is proud to present to African scholars, academic community, institutions of higher learning, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and the private sector a platform, better say, a community that brings learning, teaching, mentoring, collaboration, publishing, and scholarly visibility in one place.
The ambition of ASFIScholar is to make learning, teaching, and collaboration seamless for African scholars. ASFIScholar will genuinely catalyze the strength of African scholars, home and in the Diaspora, to continuously create a community the African scholar can be proud of; a platform that empowers African scholars to be globally competitive in their fields of scholarship; and a platform that unify African scholarly and research forces to generate innovate research that will add value to the development of our dear continent.
